We are Cees (environment) and Jolanda (tourism/logistics) and we decided 12 years ago to quit our jobs and follow our dream to start a Bed and Breakfast. We travelled throughout Europe until we found the ruin ‘Quinta da Cumieira’ and it was love at first sight. After rebuilding the Quinta we started building the new B&B area with swimming pool, pool house, the safari lodge tents and finished our latest project in 2015, the Finnish sauna.
With our B&B we created a little paradise where we would like to spend a holiday ourselves. Small, intimate, luxurious, surrounded by nature, lots of privacy and tranquility, pure food, conviviality and exclusivity. With only 2 safari lodge tents set in 7,5 acres there is plenty of room. The several cozy seating areas are ideal to read a book or just to relax.
Our working organic wine farm is set in 7,5 acres with vineyards, fruit, nut and olive trees, bordered by the river Peio. We make our own olive oil and wine called ‘Vinho Verde‘, a specialty from the region. From the grapeskins we make gin, called “aguardente”. We use some of this gin to make diverse liquors with lemon, fig, prune, and kiwi, only using our own biologically grown fruit. Try the home made apple and pear juice from our fruit trees or picking wild strawberries. The water supply comes from our own well and tastes like delicious fresh spring water. We get our honey from the neighbour and our chickens will provide fresh eggs for breakfast. At the riverside we created a platform with a seating area which is a lovely place to unwind and to cool off.
Cumieira is a small village named after the quinta in earlier days. Just outside our gate you will find a small grocery and a cafe. Cumieira belongs to the municipality of Cabeceiras de Basto where you will find shops, restaurants, bakeries, banks, pharmacies etc. On Mondays there is a market in the town. Cabeceiras de Basto has a beautiful baroque church named Mosteiro S. Miguel de Refojos of which the construction started in the 12th century. The village of Cabeceiras de Basto is a 10 minutes drive from our quinta.
We welcome tourists and enjoy helping our guests explore this beautiful region in North Portugal. An ideal place to unwind and enjoy nature. Try the Portuguese food, the local products and ‘Vinho Verde’ wine tasting at the local wineries. Stroll around picturesque villages and cultural cities. Here you will find the beauty of nature and discover a non touristic, still unspoilt Portugal.
We live together with our dog Fox, cat Ninja, geese, ducks and chickens at the quinta. It is a dream come true and we hope you will share and enjoy its un-spoilt beauty with us. We will take care of all your wishes and needs to make sure you have an extraordinary and unforgettable stay with us.
